  Prof. Ameen F. M. Fahmy - CV 

   Ameen Farouk M. Fahmy was born in Cairo Egypt 1942. After attending the primary, and secondary schools in Cairo city, he attended faculty of science at Ain Shams University,Cairo , from which he was graduated with a BS.C degree in Chemistry 1962. Then he was appointed as demonstrator at the chemistry department faculty of Science, Ain Shams University. His graduate work was carried out at the the sam place where he received an M.Sc. in 1965, and then he was received a Ph.D. in 1968 under supervision of Professor W.I.Awad at Ain Shams University. After receiving his Ph.D.,  Fahmy  appointed as lecturer of organic chemistry and  spent  four years in the Ain shams university Laboratories of Professors  A. Sammour, and F.G. Baddar  doing research work on Synthetic organic chemistry .During the Period Sept1972-Feb.1973 he was in sabbatical leave  at the university of Salford UK, Doing research work on Azide chemistry, in  the laboratory of Prof. Hans Schutzky of Salford University. In 1973 he was appointed as an Assistant Professor; since 1979 he has been Professor of organic Chemistry at Ain Shams University,  then professor Emeritus from 2003 till now.  In 1976 he was also appointed  as an chemistry expert in Science Education Center (SEC) of Ain Shams University. He supervises a research group of about 40 students working on a wide spectrum of problems in organic chemistry. Fahmy served as a member of the expert committee of (SEC) that develop science education in Egypt, and then introduce SATL in different sciences. Fahmy was appointed as Chairman of the chemistry department of faculty of Science, Ain Shams University from 1993-1999. From 2000-2003, Fahmy was appointed as the director of Science Education Center (SEC). Fahmy was elected and served as Vice president of Egyptian Heterocyclic Chemical Society (EHCS) from1997-till now.  In 1999 he was appointed as the Secretary of the permanent Committee for promotion of professors in Egyptian universities Period (1995-1998 ).  Fahmy was appointed as national representative of Egypt in the Committee of Chemical Education at The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) for the period 2000 –2005,and from 2007 till now..

  Fahmy has served as chairman for 15th ICCE (August, Cairo,   1998), Organizer of 6-Arab conferences on SATL (Cairo, from 2001-2006).Co-organizer of two Jordanian Egyptian conferences on SATL (2005, and 2006). Organizer with Joe Lagowski  a Symposium on SATLC in the 20th ICCE (August, Mauritius 2008).Member of the international advisory board of ICCE,s Conferences ( 16th-20th); years(2000,2002,2004,2006,2008).Also he is the founder of Ibn Sina International Conferences with Prof. F. Sauter from Technical University of Vienna. He  has served as the chairman of organizing committee of  five Ibn Sina International Conferences on pure and Applied Heterocyclic Chemistry(ISICHC) .The (1st,4th,5th,6th,and the 9th);Years ( 1986,1992,1994,1996,2004),

     Fahmy, s research interests have included (1) Heterocyclic chemistry, (2) Synthetic organic chemistry with regard to uses of acides , and imides in organic synthesis,(3) Pyrolytic reactions, and (4)Organic Mass Spectrometry (OMS). More recently his interest has shifted to the Microwave assisted Organic synthesis

 In the In 1998,Fahmy, and Professor J.J.Lgowski, began a collaboration at The University of Texas in Austin, Texas, USA on an innovative method for teaching and learning which came to be called the Systemic Approach to Teaching and Learning(SATL).  Since that seminal meeting, the SATL concept has rapidly grown as a superior way to teach a variety of disciplines at all educational levels, beside adult .SATL methods have been developed for laboratory instruction and for assessment. During his work in SEC, he was able to build a unique cooperation with scientists from different disciplines (Basic, Medicinal, Pharmaceutical, Engineering, Agricultural, Environmental, Law, Linguistics, Pedagogical, Computer, Sciences) to work together in SATL fields not only in Egypt but also in some other Arab countries.

   Since  2008, Fahmy became involved in the TQ M, TQA Projects  in Egypt.  Fahmy was invited by the Project Management Unite [PMU] of the Ministry of Higher Education to contribute in the competitive projects in Egyptian Universities. In 2010, Fahmy was invited by the National Authority for Quality Assurance & Accreditation [NAQAA] to be the chair of a new committee named "systemization for  Quality Assurance [SQA]" 

      In 1995, Fahmy nominated as the international man of the year (1995/1996) from the International Biographical Center (Cambridge UK) for his outstanding contribution to Heterocyclic Chemistry, and Chemistry Education. Inclusion of his name in Marquis who is who in physical Sciences in the 25th Anniversary Edition (2008).

    In 2004 Fahmy was given the award of the International Foundation "Scientific partnership" for his contribution to world Science and international scientific cooperation.  

2011 Fahmy was given Rajive Gandhi award of exlellence
shared with Prof.L.Strekowski from Georgia state university at Atlanta [USA] in the valedictory functions of the 3ed International Conference on Heterocyclic Chemistry , Jaipur India Dec.2011.

Research Interests, Chemistry:

      Fahmy, s research interests have included (1) Heterocyclic chemistry, (2) Synthetic organic chemistry with regard to uses of acids , and imides in organic synthesis,(3) Pyrolytic reactions, and (4)Organic Mass Spectrometry (OMS). More recently his interest has shifted to the Microwave assisted Organic synthesis.

            His work on pyrolysis reactions has focused on the Azides , Amides, and some heterocyclic systems by making use of Pyrolsis GC, Pyrolysis  GC MS combined technique, and two stage pyrolysis .For example, a number of his earlier papers in this area addressed the molecular rearrangements  in the pyrolytic reactions, compared with the Mass spectroscopy of the same substrate compounds. His interest in heterocyclic chemistry can offer elegant and efficient routes for building heterocyclic systems in different synthetic strategies including cyclo- addition, cyclo-condensation, molecular rearrangements, ANRORC, and ANRORC with molecular rearrangement. Imides, 1,3-oxazoles, uracils, 2,3-oxazines, pyridazines, 2,3-benzoxazines, quinazolines, pyridopyridazines, benzopyranes, benzothiopyranes, and spirooxiranes were used as useful building blocks in different synthetic routes for synthesis  of sprio, condensed, and noncondensed heterocyclic systems.

   Spiro, condensed, noncondensed, heterocycles were obtained via the idea of heterocycle-heterocycle synthetic strategies (HHSS) from easy one-pot, moderate to high yields reactions,. The following heterocyclic systems were obtained.

Imidazoles, tetrazoles, 1,3,5-oxadiazines,1,2,4-triazines, benzo(c)furan,  quinazolines, phtalazines, isoquinolines,  2,3-benzoxazines, furopyridazines, benzotiazoles, bis-benzothiazines, pyrrolopyridazines, pyrrolopyrimidines, pyridooxazines, pyridopyrimidines, pyridopyridazines, pyranopyridazines, thienobenzopyran, benzopyranopyrazoles, benzothiopyranopyrazoles ,benzopyranopyrimidines, benzothiopyranopyrimidines, bis-spirodioxan , and pteridines.

Research Interests, Chemical Education

      In the year 1970, Fahmy became interested in chemical education, He designed, and implements Chemistry Maps in teaching and learning  organic chemistry.

 He was able to build law cost Equipment for integrated science. He has been able to build unites in chemistry for secondary schools with most effective uses of multimedia. He was able to write books in integrated science for preparatory schools, and chemistry books for secondary schools in the period (19970-2001).In 1998, Fahmy, and Professor J.J.Lgowski, began a collaboration at The University of Texas in Austin, Texas, USA on an innovative method for teaching and learning which came to be called the Systemic Approach to Teaching and Learning (SATL).  Since that seminal meeting, the SATL concept has rapidly grown as a superior way to teach a variety of disciplines at all educational levels, beside adult education.  Controlled experiments designed to establish the superiority of SATL methods to the conventional linear approach to teaching have been conducted through the Science Education Center at Ain Shams University in the discipline of chemistry at the advanced university level as well as in high school settings in the Cairo and Giza Districts (Egypt).  The result of these studies clearly shows that SATL students achieve at higher levels than non-SATL students.  SATL methods have been developed for laboratory instruction and for assessment. During his work in SEC, he was able to build a unique cooperation with scientists from different disciplines (Basic, Medicinal, Pharmaceutical, Engineering, Agricultural, Environmental, Law, Linguistics, Pedagogical, Computer, Sciences) to work together in SATL fields not only in Egypt but also in some other Arab countries. 

Fahmy,s research interests have included (1) SATL and multiple Intelligences (MI)in primary school activities ;( 2) SATL linguistics, and Math in primary school education.       Fahmy and his research team from Science Education Center(  Asmaa Ganem,Fayza Elsayed ,Hanan Madbouly), proved that the uses of SATL in  teaching Arabic, and English languages for the first three grades in the primary schools, increases the effectiveness in growing the skills for both reading and writing. Also Fahmy and El-Dabie  proved the effectiveness of SATL in growing the  Math. Skills.

This encourage Fahmy and his  research team to integrate both SATL, and MI in teaching and learning linguistics, and Math in the first three grades of the primary schools. This was done via designing systemic outdoor activities in which we use, Musical, Bodily-kinesthetic, Intrapersonal intelligences in teaching and learning Arabic,, English, languages and Math.

The performance was done in teams in the playing areas of schools. The activities were designed, by group of teachers and done by pupils in groups under teacher's supervision.

It was experimented successfully in some primary  schools  in  three Egyptian Governorates(Cairo, Alexandria, Quina),and one school in Tripoli  in the academic year (2007/2008).
